What You Need:
- Voltmeter (Analog or Digital)
- Rubber Gloves
- Googles
You can use either an analog or digital voltmeter. However, a digital voltmeter may be easier for you to read. Also, be sure to always wear the proper safety equipment to protect yourself from the battery acid. Even if you think you will be fine, accidents happen and acid is extremely damaging to your skin and eyes.
Steps For Testing Your Car Battery:
- Make sure your vehicle is turned completely off, including the lights.
- Connect the positive voltmeter test lead (red) to your battery's positive terminal.
- Connect the negative voltmeter test (black) lead to your battery's negative terminal.
- Then, read the number on the voltmeter and determine if your battery is in a good or bad state.
- Be sure to remove the negative terminal first! If they are hard to remove, you can use a battery terminal puller. Don't forcefully pry it out because it can damage your battery's internal connections.
- If you have a battery cleaning tool, clean off the terminals and you are good to go!
Is My Battery Good or Bad?
Generally a good battery has a volt reading of over 12.4. If your voltage is less that 12.0, you will need to visit a mobile mechanic for a replacement. Another sign of a bad battery is if it cannot hold a charge. If this is the case, book an appointment with Wrench as soon as possible. Without a working battery, your car may fail to start, leaving you stranded in inconvenient places.
