Why Did I Get a Flat Tire?

• Bad Road Conditions
  One of the most common reasons for a spare tire is bad road conditions. Maybe you ran over a nail, hit a pothole, or something else. When this happens, you usually get stuck on the side of the road unless you have a spare tire with you and know how to change it yourself.

  Sometimes the extreme heat or extreme cold can change your tire's air pressure. If you don't stay on top of your car's tire air pressure it could cause a flat tire. So when the temperature fluctuates drastically, have a mobile mechanic check your air pressure for you.

How to Prevent Flat Tires

• Keep Them in Good Condition
  You should check your tires often to make sure they are in a good condition. This would prevent many reasons for flat tires, so either check it yourself or get it checked by a mechanic. The older the tire gets, the more likely it will develop problems.
  You should check both the tire pressure and tire tread. You want to make sure the air pressure in your tires is in the appropriate range. This is best left to a mechanic because they have the proper skills and tools to get the most accurate reading.
  To check your tire tread, you can do the penny test at home! Just take any penny and insert it into the grooves of the tire tread with Lincoln's head facing down. Depending on how covered Lincoln's head is, you will know if you have enough tire tread left to drive safely. If you can see Lincoln's whole head, you should get your tires replaced because they are too bald to drive safely.
• Check Your Spare
  When you do get a spare tire, you will need to use your spare tire. So even if you aren't using it, you should check it every once and a while. You'd rather find any issues or defects before you need to use it. If you do notice something wrong with your spare tire, get it replaced as soon as you can.
• Avoid Driving in Construction Areas
  If you can avoid it, stay away from unpaved areas or areas that have nearby construction. These streets could give you a flat tire because nails, screws, or other sharp object could pop your tire, causing it to become flat.
• Check Brakes
  If your brakes are worn out, it could cause uneven wear for your tire. Then one of them could go flat, so be sure to have your brakes checked out every once and a while or if you become concerned about them.
• Stay on Top of Recalls
  Tire recalls are not super common, but sometimes they happen. Be aware of the tires on your car and check their recall status every once and a while.
