  1. Tires do not age like wine and cheese. Perhaps the best thing you can do for your tires is replace them when they expire, which you can check on the sidewall. You can expect that your tires should last around six years, according to most vehicle manufacturers. Some tire manufacturers say that you can keep them a little while longer, but it is good to start monitoring them as they reach the end of their life. Rubber degrades over time due to the environment, so even if your tires look like they are in good shape after ten years, they may still be damaged and should be replaced by a Wrench mobile mechanic.
  2. Check your treads. Use the penny test to determine if your tire treads are safe for driving. Insert a penny into the groove between the treads with Abe Lincoln facing down. If you can see Abe’s entire head, your treads are below legal level and should be changed as soon as possible. If you want to get technical, your tire treads should not be less than 1/16th of an inch deep. If you live somewhere where the roads are often slick or wet, more tread is better than less.
  3. Be mindful of the weather. If your tires are constantly being exposed to heat or other extreme weather, they are more susceptible to wear and tear and should be replaced more often.
  4. Keep an eye on your tread wear bars. All new tires in the United States have tread wear bars, which are raised bars of rubber in the grooves of your tire that run between the tread blocks. As your tires wear down, the bars will become level with the tire’s tread. When this happens, you will know that it is time to replace your tires.
  5. Monitor the vibrations. Listen to your car when it is trying to tell you something. If you notice something, like unusual vibrating, it is a good idea to get your car checked out by a mobile mechanic. Too much vibration could mean that your tires are misaligned, wearing down, or there is an internal problem.
  6. Shocker: cracks are bad. Keep your eye out for visible blemishes on your tires, because these will never be good. If you can see visible cracks in the sidewall, this can be a sign that your tire is developing a leak. Additionally, bulges and blisters can be evidence that your tires are nearing the end of their life. Tires are the only contact with the road that your car has, and they endure a lot. Taking good care of your tires and checking them frequently of any signs of damage will help you avoid having to get your tires changed frequently.

Waiting to replace your tires in hopes of being frugal and saving money can often lead to more damage. Do not wait for your tires to fall off of your car; follow the tips that Wrench has compiled and get your tires checked if you are worried that they may not be in prime shape. Take good care of your vehicle - it will reward you with a long life of fun adventures and reliability.
