Prevent Overheating

One of the biggest issues from the summer heat is the increase risk of overheating. Thankfully, you can prevent it by keeping up on your maintenance services. You should have a mechanic flush and refill your cooling system to make sure everything is working right. They should also check your coolant levels. If you are low, you will need more in order to prevent overheating. Have the mechanic also take a quick look at your AC system because you will want that working in the summer.

Prepare For Long Distance Driving

With all of the miles you are going to drive, you want your car to be working at it's best. Before you head out on any summer road trips, make sure you have checked off all your maintenance services. You should check your oil and oil filter. Change your oil if it is dirty, it will prevent a lot of issues down the road. We recommend you change your oil every 3,000-6,000 miles or every 90 days. Get that taken care of in the beginning so you don't have to worry about it later.

Be sure your tires are also ready for the road. If you still have your winter tires, change them! They won't work for the summer weather. Also have a mechanic check your tire pressure so you can go all summer with them properly inflated. They should be at least 35 psi for your summer travels. You can also check the tire tread at home with the penny test! Put the penny in the tread and make sure Lincoln's head is slightly covered. If you can see his whole head, your tires are bald and you should get them changed.

Clean your headlights and taillights before you head out to ensure that you can see everything and other drivers will be able to spot you in the dark. Try one of our DIY hacks for cleaning dirty headlights such as the toothpaste trick! You should also turn them on and check to see that the bulbs haven't burnt out.

Book an appointment with one of our mobile mechanics to get your windshield wiper blades replaced. They should be replaced every 6 months. While you are at it, have your windshield wiper fluid topped off too! There's nothing worse than having to drive miles with a dirty windshield and no way to clean it.

Finally have the mechanic test you brakes and battery. They are both very important parts of your car and if they aren't working properly you could get in an accident or get stranded on the side of the road.

Buy or Make an Emergency Kit

You can get some good car emergency kits online, but we think it is best to make your own so you know exactly what you have. To see a list of what you should have in your car for emergencies, check out our article https://wrench.com/blog/emergency-items-you-should-have-in-your-car/
